Dulverton Flower and Produce Show 2024

There was much head scratching and pondering earlier this year, as the rain and the wind took it in turns to shake our faith in our gardens’ readiness for the Show.  But true to form, the Fruit, Vegetables, Flowers and Floral Art entries were all a joy to see.

This year, the number of entries to the Handicraft section exceeded last year and the variety of entry and standard of workmanship brought enthusiastic comments from all; a new category of ‘Bunting’ produced a wonderfully colourful display across the stage.

The Home Produce section brought our cooking talent to the fore and as expected, the cakes, bread, jams and chutneys were quickly snapped up at the ever popular auction at the end of the afternoon. The standard of exhibits in the Photography section was as good as ever.

There were new entrants in many sections and how gratifying it was to see and hear the delight when a winning sticker was awarded to someone who had never entered before!

The sponsorship by Exmoor Distillery was much appreciated, and we were grateful to them for also presenting the cups and awards.

The cafe area was, as always, very popular - tea and cake being a necessary part of the afternoon’s enjoyment, particularly preceding one of the highlights of the afternoon - the auction.  This year we were very pleased to have Brian Boundy to auction the boxes of produce.  His lively and enthusiastic expertise encouraged the bids to come thick and fast and many people went away with wonderful boxes of good things to enjoy during the week ahead.

It won’t be long before we’re checking our seed packets, trying a new cake recipe, looking out our knitting patterns and maybe having a go at a few new art and photography techniques. Next year’s Show is already at the planning stage.

Visitors have said that they always make a point of coming to Dulverton for the annual Show. P G Wodehouse said “Flowers are happy things”….surely Flower Shows are happy things, when creativity and enthusiasm is celebrated.
